Ken Hackathorn's
SWENSON BOBCAT |
|
|
|
|
|

|
|
|
| |
This pistol is from my personnel
collection. It is a 1969 Swenson pistol built by Armand
Swenson when he was still located in Gardena, Ca. It is
built on a Colt 'C' series commercial pistol. Swenson made
only a limited number of 'Bobcat' models which consisted of
full 5" barrel 1911 pistols that he shortened both the slide
and barrel 1/2". Many people liked the idea of the more
compact Colt Commander pistols but wanted to maintain a
steel frame. Armand created his 'Bobcat' conversions to
provide a steel frame compact pistol per the customers
needs. By 1970, Colt began to market an all steel Commander
pistol known as the 'Combat Commander,' and this model
pretty much ended Swenson's need to produce 'Bobcat.' My
first Swenson pistol was a steel frame Combat Commander that
Armand recommended as a much less expensive solution to the
'Bobcat' conversion. This particular pistol is a classic
Swenson in that it has S&W K sights that are of the pre-1970
era 'K' sights without shear pin. The old rear sight notch
in the slide has been welded up and the new K sight
carefully machined in place. Later Armand simply filed down
the old sight as a slot blank and did not provide the
cleaner look of his welded up sight notches. The factory
Colt barrel was welded up to provide a good hard fit for
match accuracy. Armand's famous barrel position technique is
party of accuracy job. A complete hand matted slide top,
hard chrome finish, squared and checkered trigger guard are
present. 30LPI checkering of the front strap and mainspring
housing along with a beveled magazine well are part of the
custom Swenson package. A Commander hammer is fitted along
with a modified 1911A1 grip safety. The thumb safety is a
Swenson hand made speed safety where Armand welded up a GI
thumb safety and made his own extended thumb safety. This
era pistol was before Armand began making his trademark
investment cast ambidextrous and speed safeties of stainless
steel. Armand's modification of the slide and barrel for the
'Bobcat' conversion is very interesting. He always used
modified Colt NM Gold Cup barrel bushings and recoil spring
plugs, modified them to work with an extended recoil spring
guide, and was one of the first pistolsmiths to utilize
extended guide rods, but only for his Bobcat conversion.
This pistol has a superb 3.5lb sear release, with typical
Swenson trigger modification for over-travel and reduced
trigger play. As might be expected, it is very accurate and
with a H&G #69 200 grain SWC over 4.5 of Bullseye it will
shoot a ragged hole at 20 meters. This is one of the more
desirable versions of Armand Swenson's classic 'Combat .45'
custom pistol work, and has his 'A D Swenson, Gardena,
Calif. stamp on both the frame above the serial number and
on the left side of the slide above the rampant Colt. One of
approx. 35 ever made.
